MIRACLE OF THE MOMENT
As I have mentioned in some of the other stories that I have written about Infirmed Nuns, this one is the
most endearing. It even brought tears to my eyes when it happened. These Nuns belonged to the order
of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, ( pronounced Ka - Ron - Do - Lay ) It was in this Convent Hospital,
in St. Louis that this occurred.
When I first got there the Mother Superior met me and escorted me around the whole time I was there,
and she would be with me with each of the Nuns that I prayed with and she would introduce them to me,
and explain to them what I was doing there that day.
At this hospital, there were 5 floors, and each floor had about 20 to 25 rooms. So, as you can guess I was
at this facility for the greater portion on the day, and I enjoyed every minute of it. As I mentioned in other
writings about Nuns, I enjoy these women and I love to hear their stories, especially at this place. All of
them were at least 80 years or older, and each of them had their own private room, that had several
nurses attending to them on each floor.
I walked into one room to meet with a Nun who had been blind for a good number of years. She lost her
sight when she was working as a missionary, from a disease that effected her eyes and that is how she lost
her sight. I will call this Nun Sr. Mary.
By the time I got to her room it was close to 2:00 p.m. All the sisters had eaten lunch, so they were just
resting at this point. It was a beautiful day in St. Louis. The temperature was about 75, so all the windows
at this hospital were open. They were the kind of windows that were huge and you had to lift them up
by the handles at the bottom of the frame.
I was introduced to Sr. Mary and I sat down beside her in the chair next to her. She didn’t reach out to me
or turn to look at me, because, she was blind. Obviously, I realized that immediately. I moved closer to
her, and I rested my hand on top of hers, and I said to her, “ Is there anything that Jesus could do for you? “
She smiled at me politely and said, “ Can you hear those beautiful birds singing outside my window? I listened to them everyday and I can only imagine what they are and what they look like. “ At that moment
I was keenly aware of what she heard, but prior to that I wasn’t even paying attention.
I said to her, “ I want to pray with you, and do it for your sight to return. “ She didn’t even resist. I
positioned myself in front of her by moving my chair around. I reached up and placed both of the palms
of my hands on each side of her face, with my thumbs placed, lightly, over her eyelids. She didn’t even move.
After a very short prayer, I asked her the same question that I ask everyone, “ Do you feel the warmth off
my thumbs on you eyelids? “ She smiled beautifully. I moved my hands from her face, and told her to open
her eyes … SHE DID … and that smiled on her face got bigger and her first comment to me was, “ Oh, my
GOD I can see you.
She immediately whipped around, and stood up and ran to the window, all she said to me was, “ Aren’t
they beautiful? “ It just so happened, but I think GOD had another something to do with this, because several
different types of birds were sitting in the tree about 10 feet from her, and she could she them perfectly.
Sometimes, we forget about the beauty that surrounds us by the things that are in front of us … Birds …
Sunshine … Flowers … Trees and Bushes … and a whole host of other things that we don’t even pay
attention to.
I can bet you that Sr. Mary will remember the beauty she sees everyday … Just ask her and see what
she will tell you … Sr. Mary, Jesus Loved you that day !!!
